Can I Remodel My Home Before Foundation Repair?

While you technically can remodel your home prior to undergoing foundation repair on your home, it is not advisable to do so. One of the key components of foundation repair involves lifting your house foundation upwards – an act that can potentially damage plumbing pipes, cause sheetrock cracks, tile cracks and fractures in brick exteriors. For that reason, it is important to complete any foundation work prior to renovating your house to in order to reduce the potential for damage – no matter whether you’re undergoing slab foundation repair or pier and beam foundation repair.

What Can Get Damaged During Foundation Repair?

Depending on the extent of the repairs needed, your house may need to be lifted up 1” or more than 4.” While that may not seem like a lot, raising a house can cause damage to your roof, floors, countertops and more. It has the potential to create breaks in surfaces that would require additional repairs to fix. That would be a real waste of money on recently-remodeled rooms and surfaces!

In addition, a key area to be concerned about when undergoing foundation repair is your plumbing. Issues with your plumbing system can result after foundation repair, so it’s a good idea not to have your plumbing system serviced until after any foundation issues have been addressed. It’s also important to conduct a hydrostatic plumbing test after foundation repair.

Without question, it is best to conduct foundation assessments and repairs prior to remodeling any rooms or structures within your home in order to save the most money possible.
